Speed Croquet - April 28th
The second speed croquet tournament took place on Saturday 28th April. Undaunted by the thick clouds eight of us set up two half lawns and the gazebo in time for a short introduction and a 10.15am start. Roger, Derek and Barbara had played in the 2017 inaugural tournament, Heather had played speed doubles over the winter months at Soham, but Stephen, Sarah Connor and Stuart were new to the game. The players were split into two groups, one of high handicap and one of low.Teams consisted of one player from each Group. We all played 14 point doubles matches, changing partners between games. Each team had 25 minutes to play all their normal turns, after which they only got one hit per turn until their opponents ran out of time.
Leo had two close games. Both Stephen and Barbara had a win and a very close game. Roger won one game and had two close ones. Stuart won two games and had a close one. Heather and Derek both won two games but Derek edged the low handicap prize on points difference. Sarah however won all three games and waltzed off with the high handicap prize.
All agreed that it was a very enjoyable way to play a lot of croquet in a short time, sharpening the shot selecting wits and encouraging teamwork. It was noticeable that, as time went on there was much less discussion and more playing! It is planned to hold another speed croquet tournament on a Saturday in the summer when hopefully some new and returning players of this kind of croquet will be available.
